Fed decision July 2021 Keeps FF target range at zero to .25%. Federal Reserve issues FOMC statement (7/28/21)("With progress on vaccinations and strong policy support, indicators of economic activity and employment have continued to strengthen. COVID-19: Why CDC wants vaccinated Americans to wear masks again The recommendation is for areas experiencing surging infection rates. It is a joke of course that retail stores have adopted an honor system where only unvaccinated people have to wear a mask, and no social distancing is the norm. That has meant that all of those who refuse to be vaccinated simply stopped wearing masks and are now spreading the Delta variant. The bottom line is that the unvaccinated, particularly the Trumpsters, couldn't care less that they could infect others and potentially cause another person's death, long term disability or serious illness resulting in hospitalization. Broker Responses to Earnings Report

On 7/29/21, UBS maintained its sell rating and adjusted its PT to $183 from $181. I do not have access to that report.

On 7/28, 21, MS adjusted it PT to $213 from $200 and kept its equal weight rating; Goldman Sach adjusted its PT to $204 from $200 and maintained its neutral rating; RBC kept its neutral rating and adjusted its PT to $206 from $200; D.A. Davidson kept it neutral rating and adjusted its PT to $197 from $195; and Deutsche Bank kept its neutral rating and adjusted its PT to $201 from $196. I do not have access to those reports, but they are consistent in mildly positive responses to the last earnings report that were reflected only in small PT increases.

The Delta variant is something to worry about. (see my citations in the introduction)

The NYT has the new cases at 71,261 as of 7/29 with the 14 day average up 151%.

The Stock Jocks are not yet expressing any concern so far, other than briefly for an entire trading day or part of one before going back to ignoring it again.

That disregard at least gives me a lot of options to reduce my stock allocation. I have a lot of inventory to sell, though the exposure to any single stocks is mostly very tiny. The largest single sale this week was 350 of 1,000 units of Northwest Healthcare Properties, a Canadian REIT, realizing a US$965.98 profit. I will discuss that reduction in my next post.

    1. Yes, I forgot about his funds from his loyal dups. The guest hadn't considered them. Of course he'll challenge everything. His operation mode is to drown in lawsuits.

Question left is whether attorneys think he will pay them, even if he has the money.

I did indeed see the delta citations. Particularly the one with high percent of vaccinated in Provincetown caught my attention. Pfizer dropping to 83% effective. Delta is much more transmittable. Best to increase carefulness.

The infrastructure bill should offset the market's worry some. So much more $ again. Also the news that poverty's been reduced a lot (news clips don't mention - reduced for now with straight handouts. No indication on whether it has a lasting effect.) What happens when the rent freeze is ended?

The debit ceiling doesn't seem to be a worry to the market.

  3. I currently managing my Schwab account using a standard deviation to what Schwab describes as "conservative". The conservative benchmark is "composed of 50% Bloomberg Barclays U.S. Aggregate Bond, 30% FTSE 3-Month Treasury Bill, 15% S&P 500, 5% MSCI EAFE (TRN)."

The standard deviation over the past 12 months for that allocation is 3.92% with a return of 6.06% over the past year through 7/30/21. The standard deviation for my Schwab portfolio is 3.92% with an 11.23% return through 7/30/21. The cash allocation is about 45% earning nothing with bonds at about 30%, mostly Tennessee municipal bonds.

The general idea is to beat by conservative benchmark by several percent while maintaining the same risk.

I do not know what is wrong with Google Chrome now. It has become more than maddening. After a window is closed, or the computer goes into sleep or shuts down, I have to enter anew my Google password which can not be saved and I am automatically logged out of most other sites where google stores the passwords. When logging into those sites, I have to re-enter the user name and password.

    1. Hopefully the chrome problem is fixed by now.

      Delete
    2. Land: I fixed it. As far as I can tell, the problem occurred after the last Chrome update. In the "Privacy and Security" section, and after clicking "Cookies and other site data", I noticed something that look new to me titled "Clear Cookies and Site Data when you close all Windows". Somehow that had gotten turned on and so all of the cookies were being wiped clean whenever I closed a window and that set the problem in motion. I am certain that I had not turned it on. I still have the problem when the computer is turned off and restarted, or Chrome is updated or closed. And Chrome does not allow me to store the password, but only the user name.

I have not figured out how to drag and drop links using non-Chrome browsers, which is necessary for writing this blog. I have tried but have not found a way to copy the web links except in Chrome which is a simple drag and drop routine.

    3. That is annoying to put up mildly. On both the problem and on the longer-term problem of dropping drag.

I have found that when Firefox updates, everybody needs me to re-enter the login data.

I can drop and drag links into various sites opened in firefox. So it must be a Google blog problem.

      Delete
    4. Land: Dragging and dropping a link from Firefox will work except when I am trying to do it in Google Blogger. It will not accept a drag and drop link from any browser other than Google Chrome.

      Delete
    5. That is bothersome.

I wonder if there's a place to report it as a bug.

And of course reporting it does nothing to fix it.

      Delete
    6. Land: Google will fix it when it wants to fix it. I have found that complaining to Google, Microsoft, Apple, etc has yet to yield any results.

I can drag and drop text from Safari or Firefox into Google's blogger but not the links where a reader can just click and go to the website.

Several epidemiologists cited in a WP article are predicting that new infections could hit anywhere from 140,000 to 300,000 per day next month "fueled by the highly transmissible delta variant and the widespread resumption of normal activities, disease trackers predict."

      https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2021/07/31/when-will-covid-cases-drop/

The Delta variant is accounting for about 82% of the new cases.

      https://covid.cdc.gov/covid-data-tracker/#variant-proportions

If infections hit 300K a day next month with hospitalizations and deaths rising rapidly, I am somewhat doubtful that the Stock Jocks will be able to accept that trend with calm demeanor.

About 1/2 of the population is fully vaccinated so there is plenty of room for the pandemic to spread and new variants to emerge particularly with the relaxation and current avoidance of preventive measures like mask wearing and social distancing.

I added shares on the dip last Friday, but will not be discussing my trades on this one again. I still view the stock as a Lotto in my risk/reward classification system.

An article in TipRanks provides some color on why the B. Riley analyst reduced the PT to $4 from $7. The analyst believes that the FDA would require a Phase 3 trial with far more patients than the Phase 2.

    https://www.tipranks.com/news/article/infinity-ball-still-in-play-for-urothelial-cancer-candidate?mod=mw_quote_news

I previously noted that the trial results were far more favorable on extending PFS in bladder cancer than in breast cancer. When added to Opdivo, the PFS went from 7.9 months to 15.4 months. I do not recall seeing a combo combination having that kind of effect, so it hard to comprehend what the B. Riley analyst means by the company needing a large scale trial to "show statistically significant differences.”

There was also meaningful difference in PFS for patients with PD-L1(+) breast tumors from 7.5 to 11.2 months compared to the standard of care treatment of Tecentriq + Abraxane.

    https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20210727005605/en/

And of all the breast cancer patients evaluated, 86.8% (33/38) of evaluable patients demonstrated tumor reduction when INFI's eganelisib was added to those 2 drugs.

The overall PFS for all patients treated with breast cancer was not impressive with the PFS barely increasing from 7.2 to 7.4 months.

Subsequent data may extend or subtract from these PFS numbers.

As to INFI, I suspect that the B. Riley analyst may have been a contributing cause to the substantial price decline on 7/27 which was IMO a difficult to comprehend reaction to the trial results released that day. I bought some shares at $1.55 that day.

  9. It is possible that the FED has already lost control over inflation with the only alternative left being to cause a recession through robust increases in the FF rate and an abandonment of its extraordinary QE policy.

I am seeing in the second quarter reports significant cost pressure on margins, where the companies are trying to cope with multiple price increases for their products. Margins will be compressed for the remainder of 2021 since product price increases can not keep pace with the rapid increases in input costs, both materials and labor.

The latest company to report those pressures is Reynold Consumers Products (REYN).

The company noted the inflation pressure on margins notwithstanding 3 price increases for its products that have stuck so far.

" The Company is facing estimated 2021 cost pressures in excess of $400 million, driven primarily by increases in resin and aluminum. This estimate assumes resin rates peaked at the end of July and will ease through the end of the year. It also assumes that aluminum rates remain stable by comparison to July levels through year-end."

The breakeven inflation rate for the 10 year TIP closed today at 2.37%, the annual average CPI rate for a buy of a TIP year TIP at -1.17% to breakeven with the buyer of the non-inflation protected 10 year.

    1. That is the big question, is inflation here to stay?

There's a definite supply squeeze at the moment. Even buying cellphone adapter cords, I'm seeing low stock. There's foods that are in short supply. A lot of "it's out at the moments" when I ask about products.

I'm banking on one more surge. That I'm hoping I'll be focused into to sell into.

The TIP inflation rate is 2.37% for the year? Yet the inflation rate of those other bonds used that and doubled it. And CPI was in the 5% range. Is the tip, the 1/2 a year rate?

      Delete
    2. Land: I am seeing a lot of product shortages, plenty of empty shelves noted at Kroger today but they had what I was looking for.

The breakeven inflation rate for the 10 year TIP is average annual CPI rate per year over the next ten years that is necessary for the buyer of the 10 year TIP to have the same result as the buyer of the non-inflation protected 10 year Treasury.

If a buyer thought that the annual average CPI rate would be lower than 2.37%, and had to choose between the TIP or the nominal, the nominal would be the buy with that future prediction. Conversely, if the buyer thought the annual average CPI inflation would exceed the breakeven inflation rate, buying the TIP would be the preferred alternative to the nominal. Or, if the buyer wanted protection against possible problematic inflation, the TIP would be the preferred choice over the nominal.

As far as I am concerned they both stink.

    3. The breakeven inflation rate for the 10 year TIP is not predicting problematic inflation. The current inflation rate is estimated to be higher over the near term than the current breakeven inflation rate and then taper off in time, with the annual average CPI rate falling below the inflation rate.

If there is an average annual CPI rate of 2.37% over the next ten years, I would regard that as an overall benign number for stocks. Bad for bonds at their current yields.

The main issue is whether the market is currently substantially underestimating the coming inflation rates and that, when proven true, will cause a bear market, particularly when the FED in this scenario is farther behind the curve than it has ever been in addressing inflation and preventing problematic inflation from becoming embedded, which is what happened in the late 1960s. Back then, when it became clear that inflation was problematic, a bear market in stocks started and lasted for about 18 years, producing almost a negative 2% total annual average return in the S & P 500 over that period. Bonds were crushed in 1970s but had already been in a bear market since 1950 after the FED quit manipulating interest rates far below the inflation rate in 1951.

So is the cat already out of the bag? The market says no but the evidence may soon undermine that thesis that is so important to current stock prices.

      Delete
    4. Oh right, duh. TIP is estimating for 10 year. The other bonds who's name I forget (inflation protected) are using current inflation.

      Delete
    5. This is the tough spot:

If the cat is out of the bag... then it's important to start selling.

If inflation is not here to stay, then selling out is a painful mistake.

Except... there's already high valuations compared to what was in Feb 2020's economy. Lots of something funky and uncomfortable hanging around.

So either way, time to sell.

But if inflation isn't here, and the virus ends, and economy stablizes... then one's missed the divs, and even if it's more limited, growth ... while staring at ZIRP.

      ---

If time to sell, normally the VIX model reflects that the market drops, recovers some before investors really get used to the bad news.

With inflation being so visible, will the realization it's here, be the start of a drop with little recovery period?

      ---

Important thesis points that you've put out here.

      Delete
    6. Land: You were confusing TIPs with Ibonds or savings bonds whose coupon matches the inflation rate.

      Delete
    7. I wasn't mixing them up together. I was being even more dense than that.

One's inflation set for 6 months. The other is an estimate for 10 years. I simply... forgot that they were different time periods. Your reminder was very helpful.

I do tend to mix up the various bond instruments since I never bought them. I didn't even buy bond/stock mutual funds. Only stock ones.

      Delete
    8. Land: The IBOND does not contain an inflation estimate as part of its pricing structure but simply uses the actual CPI rate in setting the coupon.

The breakeven inflation rate is a future prediction over the life of the TIP, rather than the actual current inflation rate or the one for the prior six bonds.

The breakeven inflation rate is consequently a consensus forecast of the average annual future inflation rate and is relevant to the pricing of $1K par value TIPs; the decision making process in selecting a TIP or a non-inflation protected Treasury with the same maturity; and provides information relevant to the anticipated real yields on non-inflation protected bonds throughout the maturity spectrum (TIPs go out 30 years). The anticipated real yields on all treasuries from 1 month to 30 years is currently negative.

EDIT is one of the gene editing stocks that I own and have only discussed the company in comments. I did sell some shares into the strong rally after Intellia (NTLA) announced positive trial results that caused this stock sector to soar.

The gene editing stocks are up strongly today.

Today, Evercore increased its PT for EDIT to $60 from $20 and raised its rating to outperform.

    EDIT did report yesterday.
